A podiatrist can successfully treat a variety of different foot issues. From hammertoes to foot infections or fractures, Dr. Derek McCammon ing in Gresham, Oregon, can examine each patient and determine the right course of action for each particular situation.

Different Types of Foot Problems

Fractures can occur when an injury occurs to the bones of the forefoot. Whether stress fractures or general fractures, these injuries typically occur because of trauma, twisting or from dropping a heavy object on the foot itself. Often times these injuries do not heal without surgery. The ankle, toes and tendons or muscles can also be affected with this type of injury.

Hammertoes are another foot issue that a professional podiatrist can treat. This is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes. The toe is bent at the middle joint. If this is left untreated, it can become inflexible and may require surgery in the future. Corns or calluses on top of the joint are common with those with hammertoes. Pain is often felt while wearing shoes. Hammertoes generally are caused by muscle imbalance or wearing shoes that don’t fit right. Treatment for hammertoes involves toe exercises or straps, cushions or pads to relieve any symptoms felt by the patient.

Athlete’s foot is caused by fungus and can lead to itching, scaling or blistering of the soles. It is highly contagious and can be spread from person to person or just walking barefoot where the floor is contaminated. It is treated by a podiatrist with antifungal medications.
